Shareware, ethics and marketiing

Well, actually, I believe that there was a team by the name of Atmos that seemed fairly successful in getting it's work done.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Have to correct you here. There are at least two teams of more than three who have the determination and commitment to follow through and finish their TC's (both are actually Total Conversions rather than partial conversions) one is Sephil Saga, the other is Factions. I'm pleased to be a member of both teams 😄

That is true. However, I was referring to teams currently working right now. The past is gone; nothing can change the fact that ATMOS made a successful game.

Factions looks interesting. Can't wait until it's done; until then, I'll be working on a TC that's not called Fatal Alliance (Fatal Alliance has been placed on 'indefinite hold' as of now), and dreaming up new ways to tell a story. (As well as updating the long-overdue SS page.)

I worked with some people to make a plug for EVO, but we weren't exactly a team: we rather did one or two outfits each to contribute to (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/cgi-bin/vftp/show.pl?product=evo&category;=plugins&display;=date&file;=DarkStation10.hqx")this(/url) to add to Samurai's ideas, so it's not really a teamwork.

For the matter at hand, I definitely vote for donationware, and I would be more than happy to send sollicited money to a good plug maker. I've always supported shareware and I pay for uncrippled shareware, just that I couldn't before. However, it seems to me it would be a bit complicated to make a more serious licencing, and I think that plugs should not be taken too seriously as a money-maker.

If 'team' means two people or more, there are exactly 2 teams that I know about that have the determination. All I can say is that Azdara's an excellent partner ;).

Personally, I would buy it only after I've heard enough extremely positive feedback. I would definitly buy the SFA TC, but we don't have too, so YAY!

As for the licensing the Nova engine thing - its just like what happens with the Unreal engine or Quake engine: theres a whole bunch of games out there (Elite Force, Deus Ex, etc) based on those engines which the developers of those games licensed the engine from the original developers of it. Ambrosia willing, someone could, theoretically, license the Nova engine from them to develop a new scenerio and redistribute it as a new game. But, I prefer the super-mega-awsome free TCs :).
