I want to change the timeframe for hyperdrive jumps using oütfs.
Obviously, you can decrease the timeframe, but can you increase it?
To explain away the cost of ships in 2478, I want smaller ships like a shuttle to use outdated hyperdrives that take 30 days to jump between star systems whereas top end military ships have 1 day jumps.
Can you add days to the jump time???
I would check, but I accidentally deleted some crucial files in Nova (oops...), so I can't open it until I redownload it in April (when I have access to a high-speed connection).

Yep. Outfit mod type 22 (hyperspace speed mod), positive numbers increase jump time, negative numbers decrease.

Is there a maximum jump time or can it take years, in theory?

The field has a mininum value of -32767 so I estimate +-3 of that number.

Actually, +32767 - it's a 16 bit signed integer.

Isn't it +32767 and -32768? It works with negative values.
It appears to be 5 days max. Gave this mod type 22 to an outfit I had and gave it a value of -32767, and did two jumps. Start: June 4, 1178 End: June 9, 1178 Start: June 9, 1178 End: June 14, 1178

I'm pretty sure that UT is implementing this and can cause it to be more than 5 days max.
Nobody can say anything definitive?
Test it for yourself. That's the most definitive that you can get. (Sorry, that wasn't intended to sound like a smart ass response.)

shakes in exasperation!!! So I ask again: Does anyone know the maximum jump time?
(This message has been edited by Zzap212 (edited 03-07-2004).)
It works for 1000 days but there's a 10 second lag (on a dual G5) when jumping into a system. This increases and decreases according to the number of days. Hence, I think that it can handle 32767 day-long jumps but the Nova engine takes a very long time to compute all the cron's, etc. which is what I believed happened when Nova's main screen turned white for a while before I forced quit. So yes, for your purposes, the engine can probably do it sufficiently. I just recommend keeping it under 50-100.
Another "undocumented feature"? Longer jump times equals realistic longer white-out periods?
Thank you for checking this out (even if you made a non-smartass smartass reply without reading first)

Yeah. It's known that the nova engine takes a while to process zillions of crons if you advance the date by obscene amounts. UT or Masa discovered this for a "prison" idea (with long mission holdoff) -Az

Heh. Sorry, it's late so I just skimmed your post. After I realize you couldn't test it (and weren't just being lazy), I decided to test it.
Azratax: Did they ever find a solution to the issue of simulating a prison sentence?
ZZap: That would be a platform compatability issue - PCnova dont have white flash, so it would just be a delay. In any case though, even if it is more realistic, it would slow down the game - and jumping in nova is too slow already.

What issue? -Az

It depends on the system the hardware uses to encode negative numbers, but generally yes. 0 is positive, and 2^15 is 32768.

How to simulate it without having to wait so long for it to load.

I think at the time they were happy that it just worked and all. Sides, if its for a prison term (a rare occurance, one hopes), you dont care how long it takes. -Az
With negative values, would you go back in time?
I'm still a noob to the seamy underside of Nova, so don't kill me here.
