Resedit and OS X - any solutions

There seem to have been a number of threads now which relate to Resedit's instability under OS X.
Unfortunately, none of them seem to have conclusive answers.

Has anyone yet identified what the problem is that causes Resedit to freeze OS X, and does anyone have a fix or work around?

I've just been using Mission Computer.

The times I've actually used ResEdit in Classic, I haven't had a problem.

It seems to be fairly random as far as I can tell. I use it a lot in OS X and sometimes it works for hours withought crashing. But, sometimes I can hardly use it for 5 minutes straight.

3 things I have noticed:

-When you open resedit, if you launch it and switch to another program while classic is starting up and only switch back to it after resedit is already loaded, it will crash and you will be forced to force-quit it. This will occur after you click past the splash screen.

-Resedit sometimes crashes when being hidden/minimized.

-Resedit behaves strangely when you exceed the 15 meg file limit. (which actually seems to be on the low side of 15.)

------------------

My solution: edit with mouse in right hand, hold left hand over command-S. Change a field. Save. Click button. Save. Click. Save. Crash. Relaunch.

Other than that, it seems the only solution is to do everything you can in one of the OSX native editiors like MissionComputer. Personally, I do most of my work with Context/Restore anymore except for graphics imports, so it is becoming less and less an issue. If EVONE was free, I'd say that it's probably a good way to go. (I also personally feel I should recieve a free copy, in the name of accelerating progress on SS, but that's neither here nor there!)

In any case, Martin, the only decent solution seems to be to just boot into Classic- which isn't a solution at all.

I wasn't aware of any instability. I use different versions of ResEdit (each has different templates installed) and have had absolutely no problems under 10.2.5. I have OS9.2 pretty optimized, though: really stripped bare, no frills. Having said that, I do have the extension Forker 1.3 installed under classic. It lets me open and edit data forks in ResEdit.

Wow, I'm obsessive compulsive about saving too! It sure can save a lot of frustration.

Yeah. I usually save after even the slightest change. Left hand defaults to CMD-S. I often even find myself saving twice after only doing one thing.

I'd like to call this meeting to order. Here here!

I'll start off. My name is Charlie, and I'm addicted to saving... <sniff, sniff> I used to save after just bringing Resedit out of hiding, even when I knew I saved before... I knew it did nothing... I'd double-save, even triple-save. I'd cross my fingers every time I openned a resource. But thanks to you guys, I'm getting better...

Unfortunately, I still manage to lose quite a bit of work. I lost an entire mission string that I spent 2 days writing when ResEdit crashed DURING a save. Corrupted the file beyond repair. Fortunately, it wasn't the whole data file, it was a new one just for that mission string... I'm still pissed about it though, and I still haven't re-created that string! Errr...

Resedit hardly ever crashes on me, while MC refuses to save any changes after the first time i use the save command. Don't switch to other apps while ResEdit is loading and disable the 'Open dialog' on launch option in the preferences and you should be fine.

😛 Me too. ResEdit is just unstable. No way around it - although keeping file sizes small and having only one file open at a time can help. Still I've had it crash on me several times just after opening the file and opening the first resource. But at least it saves consistantly - unlike some other programs.

Indeed, it has become a habit now... Not just Resedit, but that is how it all started...

------------------
Eat blazing electric death!

Under Mac OS X I have become so used to never having to save anything because nothing ever crashed. Now I startup ResEdit and bam, it crashes, I have noticed that It crashes most when I have just opened up data windows (especially ship) changed some values, and closed it. Seems to crash after the fifth of sixth one. If I boot into Mac OS 9 and do the same thing, ResEdit will crash in the same place, except that it will bring down the whole OS requireing a restart.

/me bows before OS X and UNIX in general.

And as Masamune stated, the only real solution is change value, close window, save, do again, save, save some more. Save. What a pain in the ass.

I have a solution, but one would need to be really hardcore to use it: convert the resource fork to a data fork using (url="http://"http://www.resexcellence.com/files/QuickConvert.sit")QuickConvert(/url). Then you can edit your resource data in the word processor of your choice. Once done, convert the text file back into a file with a resource fork by using QuickConvert again.

Not the easiest thing, but guaranteed no crashing.

One could also use the resource to text file to resource utilities Roger made. I wouldn't do any large scale resource work without them (and have long ago thrown out the clunky versions I made)

Only twice? I hit it at least three times right away, and then as many as five more times while I just sit there thinking or whatnot.

Interesting. I often use ResEdit under OSX with multiple (around 3-7) files open, and it rarely crashes.

Does the fact I'm running 9.1 under Jaguar (10.2) have anything to do with it?

------------------
The programmer's code of etemology: there's always another bug.

I run Classic 9.2.2 under Jaguar 10.2.8 without any stability problems at all. Occasionally on wake from sleep, the entirety of Classic hangs, but that's not a problem unique to resedit. And the oütf editor is just plain buggy, so one needs to be careful.

I honestly can't imagine using anything other than NovaTools to work on my project, though. EV-Edit has scarred me for life.

I have never experienced any problems running ResEdit in Mac OS X, which leads me to wonder whether people's Classic installations are at fault.

Yes, in version 3.0.0 you have to use 'Save As'. I've posted a 3.0.1 update fixing this problem which will be available as soon as someone updates the add-ons page.

Likewise, ResEdit is stable for me in Classic (ResEdit 2.1.1, OS 9.2.2, OS X 10.2.6). Sometimes I've had it crash when working with shäns, I think, or maybe I was going over the 15 MB limit, which of course prevents you from being able to save since you're exceeding the file structure's limits.

I think I may have heard that ResEdit 2.1.3 (is that the right number?) is less stable than 2.1.1, but I'm not sure. I have also heard that 2.1.3 is required for NovaTools, but I find that it works fine for me in 2.1.1.

I have done both quite a bit and it has never crashed for me for either. If it does that regularly for you...I dunno.

ResEdit seems to be fairly random in choosing to crash. It would be nice to establish a pattern of why, that way one could avoid the problems. But, no. Its evil and hates us all. 😛

I just wish Apple would OpenSource Resedit. Its of no use to them to keep it propreitary, and I can imagine no harm in releasing the source...

------------------

ResEdit only crashes for me when editting outfits and very very rarely when switching applications.

With the massive sprites in SWN, I have to be pretty careful not to go over the limit(which on my computer seems to be not much more than 13 megs, not 15).

I don't use any other applications. Mission Computer runs slow on my computer. EVONE is a joke. I think I may have tried one or two other solutions. None of them solved anything.

Hopefully I'll be getting a Dual G4 for christmas. Until then, these are my computer's stats. See if anything I've got correlates to something you've got.
