Planet destruction help.

I'm wondering if this is possible within EV Nova and if so if someone could give me an idea how to accomplish:

what I've got is a weapon that "Destroys" Planets.. but what I want to do, if its possible, is upon hitting a planet with this weapon I want the graphic of the planet to change, preferably to some sort of airless mooon.

now would I have to make a seperate mission to change the visbit or is there any way to trigger this so the weapon could be fired at any plaet and always have the same effect?

also other then going in and editing every planet independently is there any way to extend the destroyed time of the planet you fire upon?

Yeah thats about what I thought.. what I was actually hoping for was a way to do it without having to edit the spob for every planet to make it work. Thats a huge amount of editing.

ah well. I guess I'll just have to do it that way if I want the desired effect.

Well. You would need to do it for each planet in any case, because not all planets can use the same dead graphic (since some planets are larger than others). Could you use ConText to get all the spobs into Excell, so you could more quickly enter the numbers for deadgraphic? (and then use resstore to put the modified data back into the plug)?

Still sounds like a fun project for the next time I've got a few hours to kill. I'll make all planets have like a 60 day down time, give em specific dead ID and then go kill the known universe.

oughtta be fun to post the pilot log from that. although first I'll dominate em then kill em.

"You surrender?, Hahaha I dont accept, Die!"

heres another question if I use the command for that I assume I'd have to leave the system and come back before the new graphic shows. its not instant, Right?

and what if you kill a Hypergate? will that kill all the links that lead to and from it as well?

This is totally off-topic, but Unreal Centipede, in your signature, shouldn't it be "banister" not "banter" of life?

Just to have something on-topic, Kagato, use Context. It's simply the best way to do a big change like that. Seriously- it should only take you 15 minutes MAX to do those changes, assuming you are familiar with context and spreadsheets. Good time to learn if you aren't. Context/Restore have been incredibly invaluble while working on SS.

I've never really played with spreadsheets much.. I've got no idea what "ConText/Restore" is. is this a EV Nova edit program? or a function of Appleworks? I think thats all I've got that even has Spreadsheets.. although I might have Microsoft Excel laying around here somewhere from like at least 7 years ago.

download the plug in my sig, and copy all the spobs from it, and you can use them to save time. just as long as i receive credit, then you can use it.

Context/Restore is part of the original full NovaTools suite. Context converts your plug's resources to an ASCII spreadsheet, restore puts it back. You can get them from Ambrosia's site.

I use Appleworks to do all my editing, it works fine. Just be sure to save your changes back as ASCII when you want to restore.

I'd use Excel, I've found it easier to use than the Appleworks one (HOW THIS POSSIBLE? Apple, you're ruining your reputation among us...), but notice I said "I'd", not "I", so I don't really, though I know where to get the programs (ConText and ResStore). You get them at w00tware, also called NovaTools. this can be found at:

Anyway, I think it would look kind of dumb to have a moon, maybe you should have like remains of the planet floating around or something...just a thought.

hmm maybe I could do that.. take the existing graphic of the 2 different sizes of planet.. break into parts via photoshop and remask.. but the problem with that is that the planets regenerate. Talk about pulling yourself together. Fun idea though.

edit: I took a look at your plug Kartanik as far as I can tell you didnt change any of the planetary graphics once you killed em. which is the big thing I want to do. and I already made the weapon (I called em planetary torpedoes, guided and 2 of them has been enough to kill anything I've fired on so far.)

Thanks for the offer though.

They regenerate? Would you care to elaborate (as in, give me an idea of what on earth you mean)?

Destroyed planets regenerate in Nova unless you specifically tell them not to. theres a variable to set number of days before it happens though or you can set it to none. but if you set em to never regenerate then once you destroyed a planet you could never go there again.

for my plug I was gonna set it to about 60 days before they are restored automatically.

Maybe in the next version I'll see about actually destroying all the planets and stations.. sounds like an awful lot of work though.. just going through and re-editing all those graphics, checking the planet sizes, attaching the right variable to each, plus finding and explosion. well it took almost 2.5 hours to do it right. Was kind of fun to be able to blow em all up at will though.

I expect I'll post a version of this to the webboards just to see what kind of interest there is. and that will determine whether I just keep it as is for my own amusement of consider modifying and supporting it for a while.

Did you use ConText and ResStore? They should only take a few minutes to process all the planets, once you've identified which ones are planets and which are stations.

Nope, didnt feel like trying to figure out another program into the mix. I just did it while I was watching TV.

If you're planning on making plugs, its a good idea to learn them. It's a fairly easy process; drag plug/data file over ConText, select resource types to output, draw resulting file into spreadsheet, edit, drag editted file onto ResStore, select resources to process, load resulting ResEdit file and copy resources into plug. If you can use a spreadsheet, you can use these apps. Chances are you have either AppleWorks or Excel. Or both. In Appleworks, you create a new spreadsheet and then choose 'Insert file' from the menu to dump ConText's output into the spreadsheet for editing. You may need to adjust the spreadsheet column number to fit everything in though. Excel can edit ConText's output directly and lets you do lovely things like 'Paste special' where you select the number 2, copy, select all weapons speeds and 'Paste special' to instantly double every weapon speed.
