Recently in one of EV Super Nova's requests for us to build him a ship, me and a few other people said it would be very hard to make fighter spins of a different color. ArcAngel Counterstrike responded with a picture of dozens of multicolored vipers, making me look like a fool. My question is, How, oh how, were those made so quickly? (I had replied on that topic, but it looks like the mods gave the axe to EVSN's ship request posts (all 6 of them)) I am making a government in a plug that will need its own versions of some fighters (just like the rebel's, pirates, and so on) emblazoned with the the appropriate colors, so it is of great interest to me how this multicolor magic was done. -Az

oooOOOoooh Well, you've demonstrated that it is easy. I had figured out that it was easy... Knowing that it is easy doesn't result in knowing how to do it though, especially for fools like me. How do you do that color-magic? -Az
To clarify what ArcAngel's saying, in Photoshop (or probably any other decent graphics program like the Gimp) there is a panel in which you can play with an image's hue (color). Just export the sprites from EVN to PICT files with DeRLE (a utility from w00tware, the makers of NovaTools), open them in such a program, and it's an incredibly simple matter to change their color.
Aaaaaah! Thanks. Now, of course, the problem is i cant enrle/derle sprites (blasted emulator) until i can find a way to get the drivers for the network card over to the ppc mac i "obtained" for this purpose to get the network card running so i can download an ftp client so i can run enrle/derle and get files on and off of it. (note that what i would have to do is: bring files to mac. Convert them to picts. Bring picts to a pc to edit them, then back to the mac to rle them, then back to the pc to play.) Is photoshop with color adjust how AAC did it? If so, though, i wonder how he got only parts of the ships to change color... -Az
Yes, its Photoshop. I could either pick a single color value and change it. or if that was not a option (ships of one solid color) I manualy select the parts I want to change and colorize it. Then there is the insane addition of changeing the ship frame by frame. Hmmm. Cool. Thanks. Now if only i could deRLE and enRLE things (the mac project has hit another roadblock - blasted thing crashes whenever i try to open anything.) -Az
oh i would give anything to see all the goodies on arcangel's computer. it must be FULL of treasures.

Hehe. I used to mess around with EVO stuff with photoshop. Of course it was easier with EV/O than with Nova. If I can find the yellow/green/blue/gray/purple/etc. UE fighters I made, I'll post 'em. Ooh, I had some crescent fighter variations too.

For a personal plug I made, I turned the Crescent Warship's stripes yellow, and made a missile that used shrunken Adzara sprites turned cyan. Very cool, until damn EV-Edit corrupted it.

Wheee. I got a working mac that will (barely) run EVN, and will run the RLE programs, and has photoshop. I used photoshop to throw together a teal viper. Though i am sure there is a better way (will be experimenting, I got passable results fairly quickly by using the magic wand (non-contiguous) on the blue-gray painted parts of fed viper sprites and changing the color balance to make them a teal blue (-64, +32, -10 in mid and highlights). Was far from perfect, but came out looking decent. Course, it would be poorly suited to a cap ship, i suspect. What techniques do you all use in photoshop for this? (I am not sure what you mean by "pick a color value and change it" - how is that done?) -Az Anyone notice how the Fed' official color appears to be a sickly grey-blue reminisent of the color of that mold that grows on rotting fruit? This color scheme seems indicitive of the moral state of the Federation leadership (ie, the BoII)
An alternate method, which is great if you want each frame a different color, is to make a new layer ( apple + shift + n ) and paint the color which you want onto that layer. Then, in the 'layers' window, change the blending to either color, or hue:
Sometimes it can be easier if you only want to adjust the hue in certain places - you'd have to quickmask to do that usuing the hue/saturation tool.

Lets face it, we have all seen AAC come through in a pinch, and its always been faster then light. i want to know, whats he got on that computer. i'll bet its loaded with graphical goodies. Edit: oops, forgot to mention about the lights as well, seeing how they are not being shown. so i figure they arn't, which is a really sad thing.
(nothing Edited Below) one question i have though, about that red arachnid. its very sweet red, love it, but, is the weapon graphic, and the engine flare also red as well? thats the big question i'd liek to know. often i have painted a polaran ship red, made a copy of the CPL and made it red, giving it to the polaran ship, but having to make it seem like the the weapon is coming from the bridge. which, acculy looks quite cool, especialy when you have a CPL, and a turrented version of the CPL, and you flying something like the Raven, and your shooting the forward CPL, and the AI thinks its got you from behind, when all of a sudden, KAZAPPP!!!!!!
hmmmmm.... got a litle carried away.
I believe those aren't in-game sprites, but hey, I could be wrong ... it would be just as easy to change the engine/weapon colors...
you right, they're probly either done by hand, or most likly painted. i can get the arachnid to easily look like that. just paint it red and take of the lights, and you got your self a mirror image. i just wish there was a paint station to change lights, weapons, and engine colors. oh well.

Heh. Too bad.
Yeah, I switched off EV Edit as soon as I found I could run res-edit. Oh, and do you know if Adobe PhotoDeluxe will work for the same thing. I'm trying to use what i have instead of purchasing new stuff.

i can not describe in words how i feel, so i'll let these two little smilies speak for me.
That arachnid with the red... everything, beutiful. i'm not quite sure what to make of the orange arachnid with the narled look. can't quite see it to well from the angle its at.
is it true AAC? is your computer a gold mine of Nova graphics???
