Remember The mrxak Challenge? The preliminary one was a race, and nobody ever sent me anything (by the way, if any of you are still working on it, or have any intention of completing it eventually, let me know here). Well, I have a few more evil and less-evil ideas for The mrxak Challenge, and I want to know if the interest is still there. I think this next time I'd have several going at once, to get more people going at them.
For those who don't have a clue what I am talking about, I'd recommend doing a search for "The mrxak Challenge" whenever searching is reactivated (hopefully soon). I might also be able to find a link somewhere.
Anyway, if you're interested in taking on another challenge, or even the race one, post here. If it looks like this is something worth spending my time on (enough people are interested), I'll be happy to set another one up. Also email me privately if you have some ideas you think might be good for a challenge, and your idea might show up as a mrxak Challenge someday! It's unlikely I'll respond in any way for a while, as my "always-on" internet connection is only "sometimes-on", and I'm busy enough with work as it is.
(Note: The mrxak Challenge is not to be confused with The Challenge, a Nova plug-in made by mrxak.)

I recommend you try one that is (a) less absurdly complex than the last one and ( takes less time to start with... get people into the swing of it.

For those of us who weren't around for the original, and since the search feature is down, could you maybe re-explain, at least to some degree? It sounds both interesting and evil, which tends to be a volatile combination...
If I can do it while still spending most of my computer time working on my plugin, I'd be interested.. -K

Hopefully tonight (if the search feature isn't back yet) I'll have some time to post a better overview, but The mrxak Challenge is basically a plug-in competition. I give a challenge, people attempt it, and whoever gets it in first, or does it in the most creative/interesting way wins. There are specific rules on how it all works, but that's the gist of it. And yes, it is quite evil.
Sure, sounds interesting.

The original challenge was (IIRC) to write a plug-in that would allow the player to "race" in a viper against other vipers, as they travelled from one planet to another in a far off system. The difficulty might have been that the progress of the other "Players" had to be random, but generally effective; that you could encounter them should you chance into the same system as they; that you should be able to find out where they were by looking at the map and seeing a set of misson arrows, or by checking in at the bar.
I have before devised ways of tracking the progress of a special ship as it "travels" on it's own through several systems; it was very bulky, in terms of how many resources it consumed to make it work. That, however, was a specifically scripted path. I imagine that the difficulty goes off the charts when it has to be pseudo-random.
If i'm wrong anywhere, feel free to correct me.

ha ha, I had the first one figured out in about five minutes. But Mazca's right, I never submitted it just becuase it was too time consuming to impliment - yet I think I even figured out the easiest way to do it. Eh, I'll get it to you one of these days mrxak.

Yeah, the last one seemed conceptually possible, but it was of too big a scale for me to bother with with the amount of free time I have.

That actually doesn't seem too complicated.. I think I have a workable one that only uses mďsn and crön.. runs off to go try it

Now add judges that appear in every system and tell you of your standing in the race. Plus it has to be possible still lose even if you chose the fastest route.

You're wrong! Correction: The paths that your opponents isn't random, just the speed that they get through it. They may be held up an extra day at a particular system for instance. At least, that's how I remember it. Then again, putting in some randomness would certainly earn extra points.

Ah yes, the judges. They had to be at the checkpoints only, and they'd tell you if you were 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th to reach the checkpoint.

So far, the only resources I need are mďsn and crön, plus shďp, düde and STR# (those three aren't really necessary, but I wanted the opponents to have an International Racing Corporation label and to make fun of your flying skills when hailed.. )..

Are these judges in ships or in the bars?
The judges are supposed to be flying around in ships. They hail you with your status in the race. I'd direct you to the "official rules page" but without being able to SEARCH (grrr) 'fraid I can't be of too much help. I might still have the rules copied on m hard drive. I'll look around for them and if I have them post them for you. Kinda sounds like you figured out how to do it the same way I did

groan I've never figured out how to manipulate comms and hails.. Sigh.. I can do this..
(quote)Originally posted by Kame: **Kinda sounds like you figured out how to do it the same way I did:p The major setback for me is going to be getting the crons to work.. I can't ever seem to get them to function correctly.. mutter Oh well, I'll figure it out.
You're all going to laugh really hard when I discover that I can't do it after all, aren't you?
------------------ Art History = Cool! ...and yes, I'm odd. "The pigeons are coming! The pigeons are coming!" -Kate 50 posts in a week and a half! Latin=Cool! ....and yes, I'm a nerd. **
You could do it without cröns. Use the mďsn time limit, and an appropriate OnFail command to determine where they go next.
Well, if you want any randomness in how long it takes, you need crons. Mission fail times are totally static.
I still have a prototype of the Race plug sitting here. I have no intention of finishing it, however. But I'll pipe in.
Bring. It. On.
