Any good Infini-D tutorials out there?

Heh, that explains a little. πŸ˜› That was back in the days when I didn't even use 3D programs; I was strictly a 2D artist. This time now about represents a year of 3D modelling for me. That link there is to a very different CargoMaster that looks nothing like the image I gave you a link to earlier. (url="http://"http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/webboard/Forum56/HTML/001070.html")this(/url) is perhaps the topic you're looking for.

Very cool looking ship, CS! It still seems a bit too dark (in the large pic) for a cargo ship. But I like it!

It was designed on a bright monitor (which I prefer for graphic projects), so all my images tend to be dark to other users. But glad it appeals to you otherwise. I'll probably be making a smaller version of this same freighter soon.

Well, my new copy of Infini-D has arrived! Can't wait to try it out. Also included is a copy of Zeus, which is a paint program. I did find someone here who works on Macs. I'll be taking my comp out to them tomorrow and see what can be done. If they can't fix it, I'll just get an external drive. We'll see what happens.

Hey, cool. Good for you. Just hope you get your Mac working...

I have an 80gig external drive, which I use to store my Infini-D files on. It's perfect. And if you're using an iMac, you'll want to cram as much RAM as you can into the thing... with 256meg of RAM, Infini-D still sometimes poops out on my tower (I usually give Infini-D 150 to 200meg).

I would strongly advise against buying an external USB Harddrive. However, If you don't mind reading slow, a USB CD-Rom drive should be fine.

As a side note, you can probably find a newer used iMac on ebay, for not to much more than a new USB CD-RW Drive.

Also, if you have another computer with a CD-Drive, you can always use File Sharing over Apple Talk.

Oh yeah, one more thing; I noticed someone was selling parts for an iMac (not yours, but still) on eBay, so there may be an Internal CD-Rom drive for your iMac on there - probably dirt-cheap too. (think $20-60)

------------------

I wasn't talking about a hard drive, but a cd-rom drive. I am using a PC right now (yeah, I heard y'all gasp), so maybe I could rig something up between the two. Or I could just get a floppy drive and transfer files between computers (I'll need one anyway to use the Zeus program, unless I can use the floppy drive in my PC and burn the program onto a cd). I wonder how easy it is to transfer files between Macs and PC's?

I know. I was somewhat replying to skyblades suggestion of getting an external harddrive. (Though he most likely was talking about a FireWire or SCSI harddrive)

Don't have a Wintel box, so I've never had to do a cross-platform transfer, but in theory it shouldn't matter, as long as both computers can read the disk format... I think?

Yeah, I was referring to FireWire.

Well, I just got the report back from the computer shop. Not only is my cd-rom drive screwed, but so is my keyboard, mouse, and my hard drive is close to being completely screwed. It would probably be more economical and better if I just sent it to my brother to be donated to Goodwill...(they'll repair it) and get tax writeoff. Then just go and get a new Mac.

It shouldn't cost more then $400 for all those parts. Infact, it should be a hell a of alot cheaper then that. ($400 is assuming everthings new) And any one that charges you more then $70 to install 'em is rippin' j00 off.

Parts:
(url="http://"http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item;=2034398755")iMac Hard Drive(/url) ($15+S/H)
(url="http://"http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item;=2033849929")iMac CD-Rom Drive(/url) ($105+S/H) -OR- (url="http://"http://www.iomega.com/cdrw/predator_usb.html")Predator USB CD-R/RW Drive(/url) ($99)

All in all, that's only $262.08... Course, getting a Flat Panel iMac or an eMac would be smarter/cooler. πŸ˜‰

------------------

Thanks for the info, MadFax! The guy who's got my iMac said he would call around/check on prices, then call me back this afternoon. So far, I haven't heard a thing. I went to epinions.com, MacMall, and CompUSA to see what they had to say. Well, a new iMac (just like mine) is around $800, an iMac G4 (tower) is over $2,000. I don't know anything about the eMac, though. Unfortunately, this guy is the only one I've found who will work on Macs. With no competition to speak of, he could, if he dared, set his prices higher than what would be expected. Since I've never before had to have my computer fixed, I don't know what to expect. He could be like one of those car mechanics that tell you you need a new alternator/generator/belts/hoses... just because you (supposedly) know nothing about what's going on. You know, he told me you can put the iMac's keyboard in the dishwasher to thoroughly clean it. Just be sure to let it dry in the dishwasher. I would prefer to buy my computers/have them fixed here in town, but if I have to, I think I'll let CompUSA work on it. The closest store/shop to home is about 45 miles away. The great thing about them is they do pick-ups and deliveries to your home/place of business.
You can also get a service contract with them. With those kinds of benefits...makes it mighty tempting! I'll print this page out and take it with me when I go see my "fix-it man." Still and all, my iMac is three-years old. Why it would start to fall apart so soon is mighty puzzling!

Thanks again!

If he's trying to get the stuff from local distributers, it may cost a whole lot more then if he was getting it from some online-super store place or the like.

Except it has 3 times the hard drive space, a slot loading CD-Rom drive, higher RAM capacity, actual graphics card, is more then twice as fast... Plus it looks a little cuter. πŸ˜›

Apple's Flat Panel iMacs are priced at $1399, $1599, and $1899. Their Tower line (their only non-All In Ones, aside from X-Serve) are priced at $1599, $2299, $2999, and $4099.

The eMac is AppleΒ’s most affordable G4 system at only $1099. Pretty good computer - you should look into it. You should also take a look at Apples website - in particular, the store and hardware tabs. Check out the tech specs on everything, look at prices, basically just get your self some knowlegde of what your options for buying a new Mac are.

It's entirely possible that your harddrive is ****ed, as that's right below the CD-Rom Drive. (and a little back, if I remember correctly) Infact, I wouldn't be to surprised if coke got onto the motherboard aswell. I would recomend you look it over your self, and see if you can see any coke stains.

As for parts, it sounds to me like he's not looking in the right places. He may be trying to get stuff direct from apple, or new from somplace else, and also the "exact" part you 'need'. FYI, any 3.5" EIDE Harddrive should work for your iMac, and you don't have to put an internal CD-Rom drive in. (though it'd be preferable.)

I remember something about being able to put a keyboard in a dishwasher, but I think that was with some really old Serial/ADB Keyboard... My advice would be to wait until you get a new keyboard to try it... By the way, is anything wrong with your keyboard? (i.e. it won't type/do anything? Because you spilled coke on it?)

You could always fix it yourself. There's probably a pictorial somewhere online that would help you, if you need it. After all, it's an iMac, not a car engine. πŸ˜›

Well, whatever you do, don't let them sell you a warranty. πŸ˜‰

Spilling coke inside might have something to do with it... πŸ˜›

By the way, where do you live?

------------------

WOW! What a long post, MadFax7! I'll go "question-by-question."
1. I don't know of anyone who would carry that kind of equipment around here. Usually what you find here are for PCs. He did say he would probably have to order the HD, though. However, we do have an OfficeMax here that might be able to special-order such items. Before I pay for anything, though, I will ask him where he gets/got them from.
2. Which one are you referring to? The new G3 iMacs (basic model)? All the cd-rom drives I've ever seen/used the slide-out "drawer." Is that what you're referring to?
3. Still and all, I think I'd rather have mine fixed/upgraded(if that is possible)than buy a new one (as pretty as they are).
4. (See #3)
5. So, basically you're telling me that (in all probability), very little (besides the case and the monitor itself) has been left "untouched."
6. I didn't spill coke on the keyboard, although he said (and showed me) that there was liquid in there (I didn't see any, though I probably wouldn't recognize any anyway). As for putting it in the dishwasher, I'm very skeptical (and leery) about doing that. I wonder what Apple has to say about it? For some reason, there is green stuff (mold, corrosion...) in/on the cable (inside the clear covering) running from the keyboard for about four inches. The same stuff was on the original mouse's cable. I was using my iMac one day, when the mouse (the round one) started to spark and smoke. Lemme tell ya, I unplugged it right then and there and, since I couldn't fix it, trashed it (I use a trackball now). I have had this computer for three years and so far, I haven't had any trouble with the keyboard.

8. You're probably right.
9. I didn't think the coke got very far. Here's what happened: I had the cd drawer open and the coke can on the desk. My top desk drawer was open as well. When I moved to pick up my keyboard, the cord caught the can and slid it over until it dropped into the desk drawer. When the can hit the bottom of the desk drawer, the coke inside splashed up and some of it got into the open cd-drawer. Pretty weird, huh? Sounds like one of those Rube Goldberg inventions.
10. I live in Lake City, Florida (North Central Florida). If you want to learn about Lake City, try here: (url="http://"http://www.lakecity-online.com/")http://www.lakecity-online.com/(/url).

Ya know, I've thought of asking my computer teachers at Lake City Community College where they get their iMacs repaired/who fixes them.
Like my mother said, I'm probably one of a very few here who uses Apple computers. If I could learn to fix Macs, maybe the guy fixing mine would finally have some competition. Of course, that depends on whether or not there are others here who do use Macs (I'm sure I'm not the only one!). We'll see what happens.

Thanks much!

I doubt a place like OfficeMax would have such stuff - infact, I doubt CompUSA has what you need either. Your best bet is probably an online/catalog store, like MacWarehouse, or some auction place like eBay.

Every iMac, 350mhz and up, (Octobar 1999, or later) has a Slot Loading CD-Rom, CD-R/RW, or DVD-Rom Drive:

You should take a look at Apple History. It has very interesting and detailed info on every Mac ever made.

Green stuff = bad. Buy a new keyboard, and try to keep food, drink, dust... basically anything that could get inside it, away from it.

You can definatley upgrade it yourself. That's a cinch. As for fixing it - depends what's wrong. If it's the CD Drive/Hard drive, yeah, sure. If it's the RAM, piece o' cake. but if it's anything else... Well, that's not really fix-able.

In this case, a warranty might cost more then the repair. (most warranties are rip-offs anyway) Better to just spend the money, and if it breaks - moth ball it, and buy a new one!

'Eh? I was under the impression that your coke spilled into your computer. If it just spilled on the CD-Tray, no other problems should be a consequence of the spill... So, if it ain't broke, (meaning your hard drive) don't fix it.

Well, I'm going off on Vacation for two weeks in the morning, so best of luck with your computer, hope everything turns out ok. ------------------

Yeah, it does get pretty hot down here (90 deg +). Like my mother is so fond of saying: "Thank God for air-conditioners." I say "Thank God for air-conditioner repairmen." BTW: where are you from? Someplace cool, I suppose. I wonder if a hard drive can get screwed up from non use. When all this happened, I put it away and bought a PC (yeah, I know!). Could the hard drive get screwed up, even though the whole computer was covered. One thing I did before storing it away was to go through it and remove (either delete or send as an e-mail attachment to myself) everything it didn't come with. One thing my mother worried about (from seeing it on tv and reading about it) was the repairman finding something he shouldn't on the HD. Well, last time I checked, everything that was supposed to be there, was there. That pic looks real nice. I'll bet they came out with that just after I got mine. We'll see what Mr. Fixit has to say. My mother thinks that the only reason I want it fixed is so I can play EV/O/N! Not that that wouldn't be reason enough. But I have other things I need to do with it.
Thanks for all the help, MadFax7! BTW: Where have you decided to go on vacation? Florida's pretty nice!

Have a great vacation! Talk to ya in a couple of weeks!
