Here's the deal: I want to make some ships for the first EV, but there isn't really a good utility for making them. There is a nice one for EVO, Shipwrite, but that doesn't work for EV. Anyone know of anything like Shipwrite for EV???
------------------ If at first you don't succeed, deny you ever tried.
Uh, there's always good ol' ResEdit, why don't you use that? (Or EV-Edit, but you shouldn't bother trying.)

I agree. Take the time to learn ResEdit - you won't be sorry. -david-

Eh. ResEdit works. The only minorly confusing thing is a few aspects of size factors and preset weapons.
Good luck.

You just can't resist promoting yourself, can you?

What? What are you talking about? I didn't provide those links just so I'd have someone else going to (url="http://"http://www.evula.com/")my site(/url) ((url="http://"http://www.evula.com/")EVula.com,(/url) also known as (url="http://"http://www.evula.com/")EVula's Lair,(/url) or just (url="http://"http://www.evula.com/")the Lair(/url); not to be confused with (url="http://"http://www.evula.net/")evula.net(/url)), I did that to be helpful.

Whatever you say, I still hold the record, but I never get any recognition.
As for the topic at hand, Res Edit is the way to go. If you can do it with Res-Edit, you'll never need to ask for help about it on this board.
ResEdit all the way. I never really LEARNED ResEdit...it just got stuck in my head after staring at plugins for a while. As everyone said before, have a copy of the EV Bible handy and maybe some copies of the EV Data and the EV graphics just to assist you if you get stuck.

Beware for the other part of your sig, you are playing with my wrath... To come back to the subject, I would suggest... What? ResEdit is already suggested (and many times)! Then I would suggest to take the closest ship from the one you want to make as a ground, then change what needs to be changed in ResEdit (if you want to make a big, but not that defenseless freighter, take the shďp ressource of the Bulk Freighter then modify, adding some weapons room and turret slots, and lightening the cargo space a bit).

Try using EV-Edit. The last version of it isn't too bad for stability, and as a bonus it edits just about everything else, too. Though I STRONGLY recommend you back up your file before you open anything with it. and you still have to know enough about Resedit to go back in and check, because EV-Edit sometimes assigns weird resource numbers to things.

Use EV-Edit
Are you mean, or just plain evil? A couple years ago I tried EV-Edit and almost made an oath neve again to try to make a plug-in. I recently tried the new version, as bad as ever. Use Res-edit and all you ever need will be taken care of. Mechanisto will make good graphics, and its free. Good luck!

I was planning to answer like good ol' Matt, a one word answer, but I have to agree with dash. I don't like EV-Edit. It's a great idea, but it needs some tweaking, a lot of tweaking. It does a good job with a few things like weapons and such, but nothing is better than good ol' ResEdit. Get that, Shmelta V, the EV Bible, Mechanisto or any other graphic program and you are all set. Thats all.
Actully, once you get over the inital shock, Res-Edit is suprisingly easy. Don't let looks daunt you. Oh yeah, fun too! You really don't need pretty graphics to make a good program. EV-Edit tries to do too much with WAY too little. And too many bugs. The EV Bible(Anotated is what I got)+Mechanisto+Res-Edit+Shmelta-V=Awsome plug. It really is that simple! And the price? About $1000! If you have a computer and internet access, well, then, Free! An you gotta pay for a bunch a bugs with EV-Edit... How about not? I'll go the cheap and easier way.
Thanks for all the help guys, I didn't know there were so many ResEdit fans out there! Personally, I hate EV-Edit as well, used it (or rather tried to with no success) a couple times and, needless to say, it was terrible. I know my way around ResEdit already, from snooping around some apps with it, reading some stuff about it, and looking at a few plugs with it, I just wondered if there was anything that made the whole process simpler. I guess I just need to delve a little further into the EV Bible than I have been. And for those of you like me who are just starting with this junk, try the EV and EVO Bible Annotated additions by Andrew Glasgow, AKA The Lord Of Lemmings. It's organized into a Doc Maker app and has quite nice annotations.
------------------ In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.
I am here to support all that has gone before me. Use ResEdit. It is almost easier that using EV-Edit and then having to redo half of it anyways. I would also reccomend Pontius' EVO developer's map (also works wonders for EV), as the best map tool out there (I'm currently using it to design a 500+ syst plug, and it doesn't crash like EV-Edit). Also, especially if you're using ResEdit, get Pontius' EV calc, allows you to easily figure out which resources go where, especially useful in shipbuilding, as you have to modify a dozen or so resources to make a ship. His website is at (url="http://"http://members01.chello.se/warlordpontus/ev/")http://members01.che...rlordpontus/ev/(/url)
BTW, everyone keeps talking about Mechanisto as a wonderful free program. Anywhere I can get it?
------------------ Gage Stryker ---------------------- A fellow who says it can't be done is likely to be interrupted by someone doing it.
I got it off the EV addons page. I believe it was under utilities, I could be mistaken though. It is a decent program for being free and all, and it does create good graphics. If you get it you should also get the Dossier Mechanisto Helper. That helps clear things up for making ships in Mechanisto. There is also a site made by a fellow EVer that is quite helpful too. Mechanisto seams strange at first, but once you get used to it, and understand it you can create some cool stuff. So far I have made 7 or so ships in it with very good results.
Mechanisto is actully quite powerful for a (now) free program. I tend to think of it like Res-edit, hard on the outside but once you get it... It's easy. EV Addons page and is where it is and... GET THE MECHANISTO HELPER! You will need it badly. Comes with pre-fab ship parts/fins that gets you started out while you figure it out. Also, the helper tells you how to make sprites... A good thing.
