Poll: Browser choice

Just my opinion, though. πŸ™‚

I completely agree.. NS's 4.7x versions were very stable and quite speedy on most machines. It truely is the best browser to use while building a site, because you can't cut corners.

I also like to make sites that are usable in both. That's why I use CSS. It's about 10 billion times easier than using <font> and other such crap. And you shouldn't need to "turn on" CSS; it's not a scripting language or anything.

I normally test my pages in Netscape 4.x (on Windows, Mac, Linux), Netscape 6.x, IE 3+, OmniWeb, Opera, iCab, Lynx, basically any browser I can get my hands on. After much twiddling, I've decided that all I can assure is that my site is readable in all browsers I've tried; making it look perfectly the way I want it is a task for those with much more time than me. And it's nearly impossible in Lynx ... πŸ™‚

< **** name="GENERATOR" content="Mozilla/4.75C-CCK-MCD {C-UDP; EBM-APPLE} (Macintosh; U; PPC) (Netscape)">.**

Okay, this is rather complex, but I'll try to explain.

1. Mozilla is the code-name of Netscape, and is the identifier used internally by Netscape.
2. Mozilla is also the actual name of the open-source version of Netscape that led to Netscape 6.
3. Internet Explorer and most other browsers also identify themselves as Mozilla (compatible) as a throwback to the days when Netscape was industry-standard and some sites provided better content to Netscape users than to anyone else. So, the other browsers impersonated Netscape to let their users get access to all the content as well.

I wouldn't call that weird. Prudent, but not weird. Composer and related graphical HTML editors have an obnoxious habit of writing extremely bloated HTML. I've never looked at the source code of an HTML page generated by one of these programs without removing unnecessary things from it.

Because it crashes if you open it when Entourage is already open, in my case. Now, if it weren't Microsoft, you'd think that's the kind of bug they'd fix over the course of a year...

I personaly use IE 5.0, just because Netscape starts up too slowly, and I don't have a high enough OS to work with the higher level Netscape versions. Also Netscape takes forever to start up Java, whereas IE takes no time at all . . .

Agreed, Outlook Express and Internet Explorer use the same internet libraries, so once one has loaded, the other loads faster.

As for Java, I've yet to see Java used in any way that wasn't obnoxious as hell, and completely useless. Maybe I consider it obnoxious because of Netscape's poor handling of it, but I stand by my useless comment as being cross-browser. πŸ™‚

In case you haven't seen my site already (hint hint ;)), go look at the source code and you'll see that the GENERATOR tag's content is "SimpleText." I'm half-considering changing it to XEmacs ... πŸ˜„

I should add something like that to my basictop.html.inc file, it will update my whole site istananeously πŸ˜‰

Anyway, I use IE 5.1 as it is fairly decent, its plenty fast, its interface is very good (surprising from microsoft) it can resume downloads most of the time, (other times I have to use wget to resume :)) Though it has some problems with java still, and some secure connections to webservers, but omniweb works fine for the secure connections, and I don't use java sites all that much anyway. As for netscape 4.x, I wouldn't launch classic if you threatened me, and NS 6.x just horribly sucks, its interface is designed by AOL, and includes all their products that you can't get rid of, microsoft may be bad in some ways, but it sure is a hell of a lot better than AOL.

IE 5.0 for me
