Does anyone have suggestions on how I would go about creating a fixed weapon that does ram damage?

Try a short beam that is invisible.
------------------ You don't have to do this! Life is too precious! Good, good, slowly, everything will be OK. Now, put the trout down...
Yeah, that should work, or you could have a gun with very short range of fire.

Presumably ramming should damage the rammer too, so have a short range gun that makes explosions.

Great, will try it out. Thanks guys.
What they said. Also, be sure to make it so it doesn't drain fuel or anything like that. I noticed (but forgot to post) in one of your previous messages that you wanted to have some kind of graphic come out of the ship every time it went to ram. Unfortunately, (if you don't know already) this is impossible...

I certainly couldn't figure out a way to do it so now I can at least stop trying. Guess I'll have to settle for second best and just have the ships most likely to have the weapon have it on their sprites. Maybe something more along the order of ship modes will be possible in Nova. Or maybe I can just dream.
Don't give up!!!!!
I forgot to tell you to set the impact pretty high so that the other ship bounces off of you, that way you don't just fly right over the other ship.

Whoa.. yeah, right.. otherwise will come off looking pretty stupid. Now to just find the balance so it's not a super weapon.
If you want to have something come out of the ship every time it went to ram, you could make the ram weapon have the weapon flag of a rocket, and make a sort of rocket that would look like a battering ram in the sprite so that it would be seen to overlap with the ship when it was fired. rockets start at the velocity of the ship and accelerate to their maximum, so if you gave it a reasonable velocity and a very short life, and you positioned the graphic in the sprite just right, it would probably work fine. It would be very fiddly, but it would work.

Interesting idea. It does sound complicated and fiddly, but that's what plug-in developers love, right?
Neat ideas! I was just thinking of ways to do it a little while ago, and so it's nice to see a solution.
And Lyssa: I think that all programmers like the fiddly patches. Or at least they are the neatest way to do it in my opinion.

I thought of a way to do this... but I really want to use it as my own :frown: Sorry. But these suggestions are good go with them

Why don't you do the same thing like in Frozen Heart?

I actually haven't downloaded Frozen Heart yet and looked at it. I wasn't aware they had a weapon of that type. I'll take a look, thanks!
You could also try a very short lived space bomb; this would damage you and the other ship, simulating a ram.

Mullosk's idea is good, but you have to set the 'damages player' and 'player is affected by vlast radius' flags to make it work.

Well how did Martin Turner do it in FH? I remember seeing the resource but I don't remember what was in it...
It's a weapon with zero duration and speed, which can damage the player, and must be triggered on contact.
Then it's just a matter of tweaking. With all these 'special' weapons, like the gravitational effect of the Black Hole, the magic is in the tweaking until it's just right,
