it is the artist, not the program. you need to be good with what you have now, to be good with Lightwave.

I've purchased the following over a period of years :

Infini-D 4.5
RayDream Studio
StrataVision 4.0
StrataStudio Pro Blitz 1.75++
StrataStudio Pro 2.5
Strata3D Pro 3.0
Amapi
And lastly:
Inspire 3D

Adding all these purchases up I could have bought a whole new top-of-the-line G4 with SuperDrive :frown:

Oh. The programs I've used the most are the Strata ones, I like the simplicity and love the renderer, though what can't modelled easily in the Strata programs I've resorted to using other programs to compliment it.

What do you think of RayDream?
I have Studio and can't upgrade to 5 or 5.5. :frown:

Purchasing LightWave to start off your career is a bit much. I've purchased my software in evolutionairy stages over years and that experience from each bit of software is almost always in other packages as well. Anyways, I also believe the wider the selection of tools you have, the better off you are.

I have 5.5. I never really did like it. I think the interface disgusted me as I found it to be very Window's-like. Especially with the way some of the things are handled. Though it had some powerful "shaders" which helped me out on a few occasions and it's modelling capabilities exceeded some of the other packages I possesed at the time, interface is a big issue with me. I don't like Inspire3D too much because of its ugly interface, even though it is incredibly powerful.

In the end, if RayDream were still supported I'd still be using it.

Gee, all I use is Mechanisto...

I go with StrataVision, not Strata3D. It's very simple, easy touse, and you don't have to worry about going into the confusing complicated things untill you use "Expert" mode. It's a simple little program with amazing potential, as one would note from my typical images.

I've had my version for over a year now, and I'm still discovering neat little features in it 😉

i DID use Infini-D for quite awhile before that, and had been using Bryce since '97. so i knew about 3D before i got it 🙂

Infini-D was pretty good, but it had the one huge flaw: No object grouping.

Time is the best teacher, yet it kills all of it's students.

I have quite a few, mostly ones I got cheap or free from people because they were old or surplus.

Anyway, I have:

Cinema 4D XL R6
Cinema 4D 5.something XL
Infini-D 4.5
Mechanisto
Lightwave 6.0

Anyway, I found that Cinema 4D is generally the best, though now I have lightwave I tend to be able to achive better effects.

I do have one problem however, I seem to find it impossible to visualise 3D shapes into 2D for modeling. I just cant do it. So, if there's anyone out there who'd be willing to help on What If (http://www.damnsw.ne...riplet/what_if/ - outdated but contains story and a few pics) then I'd be grateful. Even if you have no idea what to make, I can send you some sketches 😉

One last problem - I cannot seem to get lightwave to output an RGB file. It always anti-aliases in colour then dithers to grayscale. Strange but true...

What are you talking about? You can group objects in four different ways in Infini-D. Maybe you used an earlier version, the only versin I have used are 4.0 and 4.5, both have object grouping.

That's the first thing I did, but no matter what I choose it comes out gray, and yes, I have colours on the model.

Best option is probibly to use HL, but start the D/L at night, before you goto bed, and then it should be done in the morning. Unless the server boots you for mooching off of them 😉
