Here's the scoop:
I would like my own domain name (e.g.- (url="http://"http://www.nameofsite.com")www.nameofsite.com(/url) ) for an EVO web site I'm in the process of creating. I know you can buy a domain name for around $70, but I don't want to have to pay the monthly fees for hosting my site with its own URL. I've heard you can use URL forwarding, which means when I type in my purchased domain name at "www.nameofsite.com", it automatically forwards you web browser to the actual site at "users.aol.com/~name/index.html" or something. (A good example of this is when you type in "www.mac.com" - go ahead, do it - the URL points your browser to "www.apple.com" !) The advantage of this is that you don't have to pay the monthly fees for hosting you site (your site can be on any server - geocities, aol, etc.), just the one-time payment for the domain name. My question is, how do you do it?!
Theres several ways of doing it. The way I'd suggest is (url="http://"http://www.cjb.net")www.cjb.net(/url) they provede yourname.cjb.net addresses, for free, and forward to anything you want the way mac.com works. The other way you can do it is if you do this special html code that you put on a web page at the specific site and it redirects it to another site, but this way is slow. So I'd go with the cjb.net way, there are other places like that out there too, just don't know any.
Chamrin
TSX.org does the same thing as CJB but it doesn't mask your URL.

Well, as Chamrin and CelticStarbase have said, easiest way is subdomain forwarding. I would recommend TSX, despite what Celtic Starbase has said, they offer cloaking now, I just dont use it! CJB has gotten horribly slow, if it works at all. It's only good feature is the email, but recently, things being sent to my CJB account have taken 5 days to get through...
Concerning domain names, there's a saying in parts of england - you dont get owt for nowt -- I have had experience with 'free' domain names. Dont bother. The service was awful, it took about 5 mins to load a site, and had adverts.
I have found pretty cheap domain name people - the cheapest being US$5/year (based on 2 years) and that includes everything. I will soon be paying UKΕ10/year, but that gives me subdomains and email as well. Both of these systems are URL forwarding, which suits me as I have a nice fast server anyways which does everything I want it to.
If you're interested, the US$5/year is supplied by (url="http://"http://www.names4ever.com")www.names4ever.com(/url) - I dont know what they're like though. Otherwise, just have a look around on the internet - there are a lot of good deals to be had.

Yeah, actually I knew TSX had masking but they show a banner if you use it or you pay a fee an I though we were talking about the cheapest option so I didn't mention it.

Nooo.....yankees...taking over....<collaps>.....yerg!......<gibber>......."Gee whiz pop! Is it time t go to k-Mart! I hear they've got some swell deals on Ketchup! Wanna game of soccer!"

Whats soccer got to do with Yankees, I thought they liked baseball and basketball.
Yeah, they do, but they call footy soccer. Dumbass yankees! We invented football first! Go get an imagination! Make up your own names! Maybe call it brown-egg-ball.

That's such a widely held misinformed belief, the english didn't invent football, the Chinese did, and Gildor, before you think of coming over here, organise accomodation first (and bring loads of money to pay for it).
The original point of this topic was to find the cheapest way to get your own (url="http://"http://www.whatever.com")www.whatever.com(/url) right? Well you can get one for free at (url="http://"http://www.namezero.com")http://www.namezero.com(/url). Then once you've done that, email me and I'll send you some script to block the banners, and/or popups! Great thing about this is you can use any site servor you want, geocities, angelfire, httpcity, dreamwater, etc. The only problems are that unless you put some script in it will have a permanent popup window, and that all it does is forward you from, whatever.com to your real site. It's no problem to get rid of the popup though, just email me!
