Hehe.. The nova boards have 18x the posts here...
------------------ Codeless... Day 4
Interest in EV lived on for ages after EV:O came out... I suspect life here will continue for a long while yet. I am avoiding the Nova boards in case the postings there reveal some of the new game's mysteries. I like to work through these things the hard way - no spoilers!
Also, I doubt if I'll ever develop any graphics for EV:N. The lighting effect maps, transparency layers etc. mean it's simply too much work for me to undertake. No reason to stop producing EV:O artwork, though! There's life in the old dog yet...

VoinianAmbassador : Actually, it's a really good idea to stay away from the EVN boards until you play through it. I've been looking around there from time to time, even though I haven't been able to play it yet, and I've already found out more than I really wanted to know about some things. As much as I know that I'll probably see a few spoilers, I keep going back. I salute your discipline.

------------------ Who you callin' "newbie?" I've been posting since (url="http://"http://www.escape-velocity.com")www.escape-velocity.com(/url).
I suddenly feel like I've been in a very loud concert and have just walked out into the cool night to talk to old friends. Good to be somewhere where I know everyone again. <nods to Paradigm, Crescent fighter pilot> <nods to Ambassador, Cargo Transporter fan> <nods to Opalius, someone or other>
We won't die, we'll just lose a few people who probably didn't deserve being known. We might have a very quiet forum for a while, but at least it'll be recognisable.
As for spoilers...I have two missions left of the Bureau string, and then I'm done with all of EV Nova. And yes, I had school. I feel very, very sick of EV:N now. <grins> A week of nothing but playing, and not a single major battle, like the Dreadnought, to say for it.

Heh, I know exactly what you mean. Everything goes damn fast over there. You don't know anybody Stupid questions everywhere, guidelines not followed, etc
The bars are finaly gone. They died a long time ago on this forum. Sad to see it so dead.

Sniff.. Just brings tears to your eyes when on a nova board someone comments about a kestrel and ppl dont know what it is sniff
------------------ I registered Tuesday... codeless.. Day 7
Hmm... I wonder if this is how the hard-core EV players felt when EVO came out. I had been off the boards for a little while around that time, so I'm not sure. Of course, I think that was still back on (url="http://"http://www.escape-velocity.com")www.escape-velocity.com(/url), so it was a slightly different environment.
But it is nice to see familiar faces here. You're completely right, Opalius , there are many unrecognizable people on the Nova board, and many seem to be unaware of the guidelines. But I imagine it will calm down before long - I just hope it doesn't calm down too fast. I don't want to see Nova have a flash-in-the-pan effect. And you never know, maybe some of these new faces (who don't know the difference between a Kestrel and a Defender) will become the next David Arthur or the next Martin Turner.
In some ways it could be interesting from a sociological perspective just to watch and see who become regulars and who disappear without leaving much trace.

I doubt it. The fact of the matter is, Martin and David won't lose their reputation, so no-one will be likely to replace them. But yes, it'll be interesting to see who becomes important within EV:N's social structure, and who disappears completely.
I don't think we have to worry about EVO evaporating into thin air. After all, the EV boards suffered a really bad slow period a while back, but now they've been almost more active than the EVO boards! Just give it a little time, and things should return to normal.

If I recall correctly, they spent most of their time complaining that EV Override had a two-dimensional storyline and didn't make sufficient use of VisBits.

If I understand VisBits correctly, EV never used a single one of them, while Override used quite a few.

<chuckle> Hmm... that sounds familiar...
SilverDragon : I didn't mean to imply that David or Martin would be replaced, just that it's likely that a few of these "newbies" will also eventually reach their level respect on the boards.

True, but a number of people felt that EV Override used them, but didn't use them sufficiently for it to be worthwhile. I remember comparisons being made to Final Battle, and complaints that the EV Override storylines stopped before they really felt finished - e.g. you couldn't actually conquer the Voinians or anything like that.

Ahhhhh, I see. Well, that's a good point, but at least its better than nothing. As of yet, EVN doesn't seem to use a ton of visbits either, but I haven't done all too many missions either....
Oh, EVN uses VisBits. In just about the most useless way ever, in my opinion. There's a bit of an error where I'm "Citizen" in systems that I'm red in. Also, they mostly take effect after your little trip to S7evyn, and they don't work fully, i.e. although you may have conquered the Federation, they'll still be there, or you may conquer the Moash, and they'll still be there.
EVN uses mission bits (I don't believe they are called VisBits anymore) for lots, but you can apply them to practically everything, from the destruction or domination of a planet, to declining a mission or selling a ship. This should let plugin developers have a field day... imagine a mission that starts just because you sold your shuttle. Whee!

VisBit isn't a synonym for mission bit, it refers specifically to the field that allows sΛst resources to alter their visibility based on mission bits. This field is called 'Visibility' in EV Nova; the previous games call it 'VisBit'.
