Announcing the EVO Ship Mod. Contest!

Yes, the (url="http://"http://storm.prohosting.com/cyml/evosmc/")EV Override Ship Modification Contest(/url) is finally here! (okay, so I haven't said much about this before, but here it is)

What is this contest? It's a contest similar to Jason Meltzer's EV Ship Design Contest years ago when contestants "designed" ships that had certain values for shields and speed and weapons and stuff and were battled against each other using the EV engine (actually using a plug-in similar to Arena).

The different is in the SMC, contestants will start with a ship hull and outfit it with outfits (duh), under certain restrictions. Instead of a generic tournament, I'm turning it (well, trying anyway) into a sport. The system most closely resembles NBA basketball, but in future contests I'm willing to listen to suggestions.

So head over to the (url="http://"http://storm.prohosting.com/cyml/evosmc/")EVO SMC Page(/url) and check it out (and it'll be explained in more detail there). The registration deadline is this Saturday. Keep in mind that this is the first time I'm doing this, and I may change certain things, since I don't know how things will go (for instance, I might change the division structure according to the number of people who sign up). In that case I'll let everyone know. If people have suggestions for future contests, please suggest them after I have a chance to see how this turns out.

If you have any questions, or if you have any problems, please either e-mail me or reply to this post.

---EDIT---

A few things have come up, so here are some updates:

1. Forget the class requirement. You can now submit any ship class you want (if you submitted earlier, submit again; I'll take your most recent entry). I'll update this on the actual page when I get time (probably tomorrow). The 25 million credit limit still applies.

2. Don't forget to click "Calculate" before submitting your entry. This lets you check on your ship's stats (so you don't end up with a ship with -500 tons of space free).

3. At some point, you might want to read all the info on how the contest is run if you haven't already; you don't have to now if you don't feel like it. It's a good idea though, because you might miss the parts on how to modify your ship. I'm going to make another change too -- before the actual tournament (after regular season) starts, all qualifying contestants get an extra 20 tons of space and 2 million credits, regardless of what they had earlier.

---ALSO---

If you sent an entry and didn't get a reply, it most likely means that I received it and there was nothing wrong with it. I'll send confirmations when I get time to organize everything, probably in a day or two.

---YET ANOTHER EDIT---

Argh, someone just pointed this out to me...there's a limit of 5 fighters per ship since EVO has that 36 ship in a system limit (too messy for melees). The tournament will allow more, since it's all dueling, but that's the tournament. Again, I'll fix this on the page tomorrow, yadda yadda yadda.

Hmmmm... Sounds interesting. I might join, but who knows. After all, I DID make a totally awesome upgraded version of the Voinian Cruiser. 🙂

Hi,
I ended up with shield recharge of infinity, and -250 tons of "free space" with a Zidara.
Is it normal?

Thanks,

Nelson.

Salutations Å• la vie

The first requirements are a little <cough>. It says ships marked with "w" only, so almost everyone will be going for either the UE Carrier, Crescent Warship, or the Zidara for the more adventurous. And 25m limit on price? Heck, I found it impossible to use up more than 16 million! 😉

Word.

I'll give it a try.

Well, that's not quite the case; I've gotten entries with other ships too. For money, I've been able to create ships close to 25 mil; you just have to try harder. And money isn't supposed to be the major restriction here -- I'm trying to see if you can outfit the most powerful warship in EVO possible (well, just about).

I'm not sure about the shield recharge problem; I'll look into that (some people didn't have that problem). It might have to do with the fact that Prohosting keeps corrupting my files as I upload them.

As far as negative free space goes, you have to have at least 0, otherwise you're overstuffing your ship. Sorry. If the ship is starting with that, that's a different story, but last I checked it was okay.

Uh, it works for me and most other people so far...probably just Prohosting being the unreliable server it is. Maybe it'll work next time you try.

I've found the problem with shield recharge, I think; let me know if I'm wrong. It's probably because of the repeating decimal, so when you submit it, the script freaks out. It really isn't infinity (check it when you click Calculate).

I hope this is the problem. Thanks for pointing it out.

Just a question, but are the stats added to the ships? Otherwise, it is nearly impossible to create a good ship.

I already submitted a cheat one on accident so I'm going to make a new one and submit it under a different name. Also a guide to tell us how much space we have would be nice. And how are you going to judge this i would like to know?

Yes. If you add standard outfits to the ships, they should be the same as they were in EVO (except with more space and more cost since I calculated giving everything mass expansions). This is the point -- I didn't like Jason Meltzer's ship design contest because all the ships were superships -- they had thousands of everything and were invincible until he increased weapon strengths and weakened the ships. So this is just a contest to see how well you can outfit your ship, and yes, you do have a tight space budget.

If people want me to, since few people have submitted valid entries (they all went over the space limit), I can remove the warship requirement so that you can use anything. How's that?

And BTW, I have created a pretty good ship with this, getting the space exactly zero and getting close to the limits. For those of you who claim you can't get a ship's price close to the 25 mil limit, I can prove otherwise -- just use needle missiles. You can get as many as you want without increasing space usage. This isn't supposed to be something where you toss in some numbers and get a successful ship. You have to plan it out to make use of every ton of space you have to get the right combination of everything.

Thanks for being patient, I'm sorry I haven't quite made this very clear. To find out how much space you have, click the "Calculate" button before you submit -- this will tell you how much of everything (including space) you have left. Not only does this let you know if you meet requirements, it helps you plan your ship too.

For judging, I'm using a plug-in that's a battle simulator, so it's using the EVO engine and AI and having them fight each other. If you get the time you can read what's on the page -- it explains it in greater detail, but I understand it's not fun to read all that.

Can we only choose ships that have solely the w designation, or can we choose ships with w and some other stuff too? Also, I had the same problem as that other guy did with the space and shield recharge. The second I put anything on my ship it goes into the negatives, and shield recharge is always infinity.

Hey my ships in its good I'm excited. I read some of the stuff on the page, but if you win battles do you get more space, not from weapon exhaust though, but as a bonus. It happens this saturday right, and how will you keep us posted on this? Good luck and great idea!

Alright. I'll just make a fighter then. You might want to try class trophies, with fighters in one catagory, freighters in another, and warships in yet another.

As of now, just w please. I promise I'll open it up more next contest, but keep in mind if it's totally open no one would do transports and fighters.

However, if enough people request opening it up for this one, I'd have to give in. It's just that people who've sent something already might have to resend since they wouldn't have known that.

Well, the idea is that this would make it too difficult for the amount of time I have available for this project. I'd have to run four separate contests, one for each class. I don't have the time to do that.

I guess I'll open this up then...so fine, you can do any class, but 25 mil limit still applies. Keep in mind a fighter won't do well this time. Later I'll do a transports and fighters contest, but I can't do that at the same time as this one because it'll take too much time and I don't have that much on my hands.

So essentially I eventually will have separate class "awards."

I'm going to edit my first post to reflect this change, so don't forget to read it.
