I tried it... on a 5500/275 it ran pretty well. Tolerable, certainly. The frame refresh rate slowed down when there were a lot of ship in-system, but the game didn't do anything nasty like skipping frames and suddenly killing you off with unseen shots. If anything, playing on a slower machine is an advantage, since you get more time to think, precisely when you're getting mobbed.

Alright, let me rephrase that a little;
Try running 1.0.2 on an older Mac under 120mhz with smoke trails on, and lots of rockets on the screen.
Oh, and while it may seem nice to have extra time at first, it can kill you in the end. Slowing frame rates affect everything from ship handling to shield regeneration to weapon range. And usually in a very bad way.
