What is so important about the core objectives? Do you get anything special for completeing them?

Not really. You've already gotten ships and technology available to you before you complete the objectives. You do however get boku credits for each mission leading up to completing the objectives, and you get access to special ships and technology along the way.

So I have a related question - how many core objectives are there?
I am aware of three - 1) Defend the UE from the Voinians, 2) Explore the nebulas and 3) Destabilise the strand war (working for any one of the strands)
Are there any more out there? Or is it on to plug ins after that?

That is the last of the COs. The plugs are an excellent next step. The ROTV plugs are my personal favorites.

Of course, when you finish them all, you feel like there's nothing more to do except collect money...that gets boring after a while. Of course, that's why you have plug-ins. But lots of players don't bother to look for plugs and just stop playing the game. You can always start over and start doing things a different way...join the Voinians and the renegades ;), fight for a different Strand, etc. But the game, although wide, is definitely limited. But that's why you can make plugs.

You can also go around boasting about how you've done all the3 objectives, but you shouldn't because people will just laugh at you because loads of people have done it before you.

It's not that hard to do it, I just have a short attention span, and get bored easily.

yeah thats always fun..... you could also conquer the whole universe if you don't get bored easily, are quite powerful (or at least fast and have good escorts), and WAAAAAYYYYYYY too much tuime on your hands.....

The third is the "destabilization of the Strand War". You can do it working for any of the Strands. They talk about it elsewhere in this topic too. i thought that i did that by working for the Igazdra but i never received at message saying i completed it. i guess i should just try to find more missions then....
