SW Update

No this isn't a message about the Coldstone update. SW is the initials of my game.

What can I say? I guess I feel as if I've made significant progress in my own game, and I wanted to tell you about it. Is it boasting? Sure. It's also a need for moral support!! The Player begins in a cave, which is completely finished, events, NPCs and all. When he exits, he exits into the world via a waterfall. Once in the world, the cave entrance/waterfall is too high for him to go back.

Anyway, I've finished the maps of the "world". It took me about 11 months to do it. I still have interiors to do, but those are easier, most of them anyway. Until I make the graphics in order to MAKE the interiors (which I'm prepared to do easily enough), I've changed my focus back to events.

I just made it so that in one map, when the Player travels a certain distance, an earthquake happens (the picture shakes), then, if the Player's level is at a certain point, flames travel over the land from left to right, then, when the Player moves, it'll hurt him. BUT if he has certain boots equipped (not only possessed, but equipped), then the fire won't hurt him nearly as much and he'll survive. If he doesn't have the boots equipped, he'll probably die. The fire and hurting doesn't happen until a certain level though. And it only happens once as long as he's in the map. I reset the event sequence when he leaves the map. Once the Player does a specific something, though, the entire event will no longer happen. While this may seem simple, it's NOT simple to make!!

I also found a website that has sounds (I was looking for earthquake sound). You can either buy the sounds individually, or subscribe. So I'm placing a "play sound" in my events, with the name of the sound I want, like "earthquake" and writing down what I need and don't have as I make events. I'll subscribe and get the sounds I need. It says on the terms and conditions that the sounds purchased individually or by subscription MAY be used for commercial products, such as "video games" without anything more you have to do. You just can't take the sounds as your own and resell, etc. So it's good for games!! Once I have the sound, I'll replace the sound in the sound folder with the same name as in the event. I have the address at work if anyone's interested.

I've done quite a lot of the "game wide" events as breaks from making maps, but am still now working on them. Anyway, that's what I'm doing. I will soon systematically begin to place in some of the "short story" events around the world and in the interiors, as the game-wide event I'm placing now begins about 140 short story events.

Greetings and salutations. Debra, all sounds great, I've been monitoring your website and posts to the board, and I must say that I am most impressed by your work the most so far. I'd be interested in seeing screenshots, or better yet, even just playing a little of what you have, even thought I'm sure that it's not as up to par as you'd like yet, but still very interested in seeing the beginning as you described. Also would be greatly interested in getting the url for that sound database site you found.

I'm sure none of you know me, as I've had to re-register to the webboards because of my outstanding inactivity to the boards, but I've been here since the beginning, before Coldstone even was released, just watching and waiting in the background. I've been deciding upon characters and stories and styles for an appropriate first release of which I'd be proud to have all of you play. I am primarily an Illustrator and graphic designer, however have dabbled alot in game design and construction, and am super excited to get going on my latest game concept. I'm not prepared to share the story with you all, but can say that the entire game will literally be a piece of art. Everything hand drawn, animated, and pieced together. I'm working on putting together main character and npc art, as that felt like an appropriate starting place. You can check out my website for some previous concept sketches for illustrations, but take note none of those are recent, nor reflect the game ideas and exact style in any way. I'll be updating you all on my progress frequently now, and would also like to get more people excited about originality in Coldstone game creation. Sorry for the post, this is much longer than most are willing to read, but I felt a proper introduction was necessary. Stay tuned, I'll be more active from now on in the boards, and Debra, again, sounds great, keep up the good work!

Sadly, we've stopped working on our game for now, waiting on the fixes to come about. I'm not actually sure if it'll ever see the light of day with the current team.

Please note the following information may change throughout the development of this game.

My game, Legends, will most likely have a name change to "The Island".

Storyline:
A mystical door way has held a great evil within a chamber. A crack has been forming in this chamber. Eventually this great evil will be free if you do not gather the 5 pieces of the door that had held it inside the chamber to reseal the chamber. A village entrusted with safeguarding the chamber has been completely overrun by monstrous creatures that have escaped through this crack. Giran the only known survivor of this tragic event runs to your town asking for help. Tracious wishes to send the main character (I will think up a default name eventually) to attempt to gather the 5 pieces of the door to reseal the evil back within that chamber.

Features:

Level Up system: Legends uses a multiple level system consisting of the base level, ability levels, and Misc abilities.

Base Level: This is the standard level gained when the player has gained a certain amount of experience will achieve
a level up. 100% complete

Ability Levels: These levels are levels based on the spells and abilities you use. The currently consist of Melee, Bow,
Fire, and Cold abilities. Basicly the system works by when you defeat an enemy using an ability fitting one of these
categories you will gain experience in that Ability level. For example if you defeat a goblin with a sword you will
gain exp in your melee ability. Also if you use firebolt to defeat a goblin you will gain exp in your Fire Magic Ability. 90% complete.

Mic abilities: Misc Abilities are abilities that tend to do no damage, and fit none of the Other Ability levels. Each
individual Misc ability has it's own exp system. For example If you use your Alchemy skill to mix a few herbs
together to make a healing potion you will gain exp in your alchemy skill. If you where to level up in alchemy you
would be capable of creating better potions or newer types of potions. 25% complete

Spell system: Spells are divided into the 4 differend Ability levels Melee, Bow, Fire, and Cold. When the player levels up in one of those Ability levels the player will be capable of learning a new skill or improving an old one. Each skill has It's own level with a current level cap of 10. 90% complete

Towns/Quests: Every town includes it's own unique townspeople and all tend to have lives other than their profession. Quests will be given at random times during the game based around the difficulty and quantity of the quests you have previously completed. Also this completion factor will also give the townspeople a higher respect for you. 15% complete

World: The current planned world size is 1715 maps of the size 100x100. There are several secrets and prises that will not be directed to by a quest to encourage the player to explore the world. 75% complete

I know a few of you have been looking for screenshots.I am sorry to say that we still don't have enough art work completed to display a propor screenshot of the game.

I'm currently not working on any games at the moment. I have just finished all my GCSE coursework and want to finish learning PHP before I get back to my games. The first thing I need to do is GoT 1.0.2 which will fix a lot of bugs (any you wish to post please do so here. After the CS update comes out I'll be working on Death Zone Gold and Space (though I may stop Death Zone Gold as it'll take ages to make for little gameplay)

Forgotten Evil is moving along at a slow, but continuous pace. That's likely to change with the summer. At that point, unless I can get some good graphics help, the game will probably halt (I have an activities period in school during which the club that's making the game meets. I have nothing else to do, so I, and usually a few of the other members, work on it. When summer comes I will be otherwise occupied.). Anyway, I may have a screenshot or two by the end of the year. A good friend is finishing up the main character model and I've almost finished the basic Castle tiles, so it shouldn't be too long. Another thing slowing me down is that I've actually begun to make a game in Java (I've finally learned enough to use the language!) called Black Jack Java (which will be freeware for any of you Black Jack fanatics out there 😛 ).

Anyway, you guys seem to be making good progress and I definitely look forward to playing these games (possibly as a beta tester? 😛 ). Good work guys!

Wow! You're doing really terrific things!!! I hope to keep hearing about what you're doing, knowing full well that things change as the creating goes forward.

Can't tell you what SW means right now. I need to wait until I have a working game, probably in the beta testing stage and register the name of my game's trademark. I can release the name after I've applied to register the trademark and before it's approved, as then it's frozen for anyone else. I'm just being careful about that. Sneaky Worms is my favorite, though!

I'll be using a combination of the Coldstone graphics and my own graphics. I see this first game as a learning opportunity for me, and need the graphics right now. After this, I probably won't.

ModernTikiGod, you're WAY ahead of many of us in the graphics department!! I'll be very interested to see your finished work.

I plan to not have my game available for download (for one thing, it'll be too large), but I AM planning to have a demo version of it to be downloaded for free. Again, I have to wait until I can send my product off for the trademark register. I do have SOME screenshots at my website. In the demo version, they won't be able to go everywhere in the world, and can only reach a certain level, but it'll give an example of the game. I've written a Player's Manual also that I'll be placing on the website for downloading as well as included in the CD if anyone actually buys the thing.

I'll post the URL about sound on Monday when I'm back at work.

I also have skills that the Player can learn, including medicine! (Great minds, eh, Graham?) 🙂

Anyway, keep it up! It sounds like you're doing some really cool stuff!!

Thanks Debra for that address, always good to build on my sound database. I've been compiling a database for years, and it's quite extensive, but it's always good to add to it. Also there is a sit that has good loops and sounds, and I think has been mentioned on previous posts to this board, but I'll place it again: (url="http://"http://www.flashkit.com")http://www.flashkit.com(/url) it's meant for flash development, but heck, it's downloadable in aiff I think, so why not, right? You'll have to check each individual file, cause some of it is royalty free, some of it they want you to credit them in the final product. Well in anycase, good talking to y'all, I'll be around.
