Coldstone Chat

I know I am reopening a locked topic But I would like everyone's opinion on haveing a chatroom in iChat. PLEASE, DO NOT POST IRRELIVENT INFORMATION. PLEASE DO NOT START A FLAME WAR, IT'S THEIR OPINION LET THEM SAY IT.

Thank you.

To connect to the Coldstone Chatroom simply open iChat go to file, go to chat, and type in "Coldstone Chat" in the bank. PLease feel free if you are having problems with connecting to the chatroom or are experienceing problems with you please post that here. The Coldstone Chat only supports aim and .mac accounts.

Since I am asking everyone elses opinion why not list my own. My opinion on a Chat room is that it is a great idea. I can just chat with other developers and if I need to I can just go on if I don't know how to do something in coldstone I can be quickly helped because it is a live chat. The main reason I thought of having a chatroom in iChat is that I use to use the software called Lasso Professional 6 and there was a chatroom for it and it was a great tool for leting everyone get to now each other and if sopmeone had a problem it would be quickly adressed.

As I see it, there is nothing wrong about expanding the community. If someone doesn't like it, just dont care about it. I think it is good to have more then just a web board where people hardly responds and threads get locked because SOMEONE posts something that is not about the topic. A chatroom is really nice, and if other people here think it's just a waste of time, dont bother going there! Some people like to chat about coldstone, or to just talk about nothing, write alot of **** and spam smileys (allright, the last one is only about me ;)). If you dont like the idea, write it here or just ignore the topic.

Thank you

well at 1st i thought it would be gay and we'd just sit around and joke, and we did, but id have to say in half a hour i found out about more games, got more art and previews sent to me via file transfer, and got really cool personal opinions from authors on thier games then what ive collected on the cs boards for weeks. these people are all really nice and so far it seems like a cool gathering of developers and ideas and what not. since i have aim on all day i just leave it on afk and when i want to chat i take it off afk. too fun getting to know people finally too. if these people are my peers and opposites CS wise then im glad to know them on that level.

I agree. Yes, a little overboard when the only thing in the post is the number of people in the chat, but did that really mandate a lock? The topic did not violate any web board guidelines (the "Me too" rule would not need a lock would it? ๐Ÿ˜› ) was not dead, flaming, or anything else... However, as it's already been done so be it. We can use this thread instead, just don't lock it ๐Ÿ˜›

I seriously doubt that you will get everyone's opinion. I do hope you get the opinions of a reasonal number of members.

As long as this thread stays reasonably on topic, doesn't sprout flames, and generally serves the desires of a portion of the Coldstone community, I see no need to close it.

My opinion: If some members like having an on-line chat room, fine. Enjoy it and reap it's benefits. Please do not try to pull people into it by coersion, laying on guilt trips, or other such means. Some people do not like chat rooms, consider them a poor use of time, or would rather use forums such as this. I am one of those people.

Personally, I like the coldstone chat. I think it's a good way to get to know your fellow Coldstone users. Of course, if you aren't intersted in that, then I understand why you don't like it.

Isn't that a "Me too" post? ๐Ÿ˜›

Anyway, the thing for me is that since I'm usually on iChat, it's good to have a place to go that's easily accessible and often useful. Many people don't like iChat, AIM, or instant messaging in general, and I can see how this doesn't appeal to them. I think the benefit of this chat is that you don't need to open an IRC client to get there, just use AIM or iChat: easy. Of course, non-chatters would not like it (or find it useful), but for the chatters (for lack of a better word) it really is helpful. Anyway, my first serious two-cents ๐Ÿ™‚

Not really, since the ones promoting this concept undoubtedly want to know the position held by the moderators, who have been burdened with the task of keeping this place functioning smoothly. It is not my place to speak for Debra and I never shall. But since she chose to lock the last thread (with justifiable reason), I think you would take that as an indication that the concept is OK, the direction the other was going was not so.

You, in particular, did express your disagreement with the locking. You should be happy she agrees with my assessment that there is no reason to close this (yet.)

I have no problems, one way or another, with a Coldstone chat room. I'm probably the only person who regularly visits #coldstone any more (and I'm not all that regular any longer), but last year it was far more active, and was indeed quite helpful to users of the engine to be able to chat both about CGE and about whatever took their fancy at the time.

Although, I must confess that I can't see the point of using iChat over IRC. I believe a reason stated in the previous thread was that noone was using the IRC channel... bit of a self defeating argument, there. If you want people to use it, promote it, and they will. I'm also more fond of the IRC protocol, as I dislike most instant messaging services - although I use them on occasion, I don't like them very much.

But, if you wish to have a chat channel based of AIM/iChat, then by all means, go for it. Who knows, I might overcome my distaste enough to log on and have a poke around... we'll see. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have used IRC for ages. Unfortunately I find IRC programs a lot harder to use. I only started using iChat when Graham started the coldstone chat room. I myself find it a lot easy and more friendly. I understand that quite a lot of people prefer forums to Instant Messaging.
In the short time that I have been talking to people on iChat I feel that I have gotten to know them better. It has also given people a lot more flexibility. I have been able to send numerous screenshots, models and movies to people. There has also been one or two unfinished games sent to people because of the chat room so that they can get opinions. I for one am very interested in the ones that I have received.

All I can say is give it a try. I can't force you to like it if you don't. I however think it will be one of the most important steps in creating a community for coldstone.

I quite understand here. I've always preferred IRC because of the freedom I feel I have when I use it - it just seems less restrictive than iChat or other IM derivatives. Sure, I use them, but I prefer to avoid them - and not just because of my preference for IRC. In truth, I rather like using iChat (once it's been a bit customised) but none of my friends use AIM, so if I wish to chat with them online, I need to use MSN. And I have no liking for any of the MSN clients available for OS X at the moment - they're either very slow, or constantly crashing. Which puts me off MSN.

As for preferring forums... yes and no. If I'm having an indepth discussion, I'll prefer a forum setting, as it allows me to answer in more detail, and actually think about what is being discussed. If I'm more in the mood for quick conversation, I'd use some manner of IM.

And this is what I meant about IRC being fully capable - all of this is possible within IRC. But, of course, that's not all that important - it's good to see that the chat room is proving useful for those who use it. ๐Ÿ™‚

One major difference I see in iChat that I don't have in the IRC is that there's a lot more freedom. I remember in the IRC being booted for uttering the evil phrase "lol." I remember trying my hardest to type out words. I would type out a sentence real quick, and then have to go back and edit it before sending. Now, of course, this has nothing REALLY to do with the program, except that there's no mods in an iChat channel. But I don't want to bash you mods... learning grammar and spelling is very important... but I don't think that a chat environment is the right place, since, like you said Andiyar, it is meant for a quick conversation.

Heh, come to think of it, I've actually picked up you're spelling/grammar pet peeves from the IRC. Tanks a lot guys ;).

I hope to see one of you adults on there to straighten us kids out once in a while (besides eLLrx of course :p). Not to say: Oh look how much better this is than IRC blah blah blah, but rather to add variety and opinion to the conversations.

No need to apologize to me. I'll let Debra handle it her way. All I did was indicate that it wasn't a "me too" situation. ๐Ÿ™‚ ~RD
