l33tspeak is more from gaming circles than from hacking. Before anyone points out that real hackers use l33tspeak becuase Largo on megatokyo uses it, direct your attention to the previous statement - Largo is also a gamer. He probobly gets his l33speak from that source.

Ok now that that's over...

Yes, but didn't l3375p34k originate in referring to hacking in a roundabout way so as not to be picked up by searches?
I agree that l3375p34k is now used in gaming circles.

That was the original reason for l33tspeak, yes, but as i understand it it was used by people distributing things that violated their ISP/host's terms of service, such as porn and viruses. Crackers might have used it as well, that sounds reasonible to me. I'll look it up in the new hacker's dictionary.

JARGON.TXT - Hacker dictionary. A large file full of hacker slang and jargon. Contains historical reference to such matters, but it didn't mention l33tspeak, probobly becuase l33tspeak isn't actualy a hacker 'thing'. (url="http://"http://www.jargon.8hz.com/jargon_toc.html")http://www.jargon.8h...jargon_toc.html(/url) is the URL for the Jargon file - one of the mirrors, anyway. There are zillions.
