The debit card has a security number to be used as an actual ATM card; you sign for it when you use it as a credit card. It's no less secure than a credit card, and it pulls the money straight from your checking account, so it's a lot easier than a credit card.
If they're still worried about it, I'm surprised they even let you use those new-fangled "e-lec-tronic" thingamabobs.

No, they're worried about someone getting the number. It's not physically handling it so much as having access. Drawing from checking is easier, but it leaves you wide open.

Well, as long as you aren't a dumbass and don't paste the number over and over in various places, you'll be fine. If someone just uses common sense, their number won't get out there (mine isn't, and I use it to get cash and to fill up my tank, as well as at my favorite restaurant).
