Nope, I don't believe so. Maya PLE is strictly for learning your way around it and the basics of all the features. So it's pretty useless for EV related graphics...

Maya PLE is the biggest POS program that I've seen and used for a long time. I had to use it for over a half a year in an animation class that I took because Alias wouldn't give my school the licenses after the school had bought the software, and then (on the school's end) couldn't get the network working properly to use the licenses. Pain in the butt. All the work that I did at school I can't use because of the watermarks. Look around for my list of 3D programs. I'm not at home right now (coincidentally, I'm at SIGGRAPH right now), so I don't have my nifty text file to simply paste into the post.

The only use for it seems to be showing people how to use Maya. It can't really produce anything useful.

The only 3D program I've been able to get to work for free is Cinema 4D CE R6. That's the version that came with some UK magazine.
The demo version which you can download from their site has no watermarks, but you can't save anything. So while it'll work great for the occasional simple graphic (in conjunction with Snapz Pro), don't expect that version to be very useful for more complex graphics like ships.

There are free 3D modelers/animators out there. The only one I can think of at the top of my head is (url="http://"http://www.blender3d.org")Blender(/url), which is actually really cool. After you overcome the outrageous interface issues.
Maya is an amazing thing, but the PLE sort of totally takes away the whole point of using it.

Yah, there's not a lot of point to using PLE unless you're looking for a quick demo of some of the stuff that maya can do in the lead up to buying it... And even then you'd be better off finding someone who has the real version for a real demo... PLE is a bit crippled by the watermark issue.

Oh yeah, Blender. Tried it. Couldn't make it do a thing. I think its fairly useless with 1-button mice.
Most 3D applications not expressly designed for Macintosh are unusable with any fewer than 2 buttons, if I recall correctly. Many work even better with a 3-button mouse, which doesn't exactly come standard with Macintosh or Windows computers, unless you count clickable mouse wheels, which are a clumsy workaround anyways :).
Other than that, I saw (and purchased a) books at a bookstore which are learning books for 3ds max 5 and 6, and many of them come with demo CDs. I don't know about 6, but my demo version of 5 allows me to use the full version for 30 days before disabling itself. An option to consider?

I got Lightwave there for $300-something. Maya 6.0 Complete, if I remember correctly, is around $600, but don't quote me on that. If you want things like more advanced dynamics then you want to go with Maya 6.0 Unlimited. I don't remember exactly what the difference is, but I'm fairly certain it's only in the area of dynamics. I think that 6.0 Unlimited is now available for OS X as well as PC (I guess that 5.0 Unlimited was PC only). I don't know about educational discounts (and it's really too early for this anyway), but Modo looks like it's going to be really good when it releases. It looks like it's a really good modeler, and it's entire interface is designed to be customized, so both Maya and Lightwave users alike will feel comfortable working in it. Not only that, but it supports Maya's .ma format and Lightwave's .lwo formats (Modo's Blendshapes/Endomorphs are amazing. I'd get it just for that), meaning that if you open a .ma file in Modo, you'll be saving back to a .ma, and if you open a .lwo, you'll save to a .lwo. It's really quite amazing. I would have bought it on the spot (when I saw it demoed), but it hasn't been released yet.
