Yup. Take an Abomination, remove all its Fusion Pulse Batteries, and give it an Ion Cannon. When the Ion Cannon fires, I believe the sprite will still show the blazes that were designed for the FPBs. Neon Soldier's idea (or some other way of letting the engine know what weapon or class of weapons goes with a particular ship's firing animation) could fix that sort of thing.

Lame. Try a raven with fusion fulse batteries. 🙂

(I hope I'm correctly remembering how InherentGovt currently works here.)

How useful is the InherentGovt field anyway? I mean, would it make a big difference if you just set them all to -1 and let other ships decide if they like you or not based on active ranks?

It would be nice to have a system that scales the universe to fit your ship size. That way, you could have a viper and have it look like it does now, but have the planet and other ship graphics appear porportionally larger. This would have the consequence of making an Auroran Carrier cover most of the screen (if you were plioting a very small ship), and have small ships appear as pratically specs if you were driving a big ship. Those extremes aside, the scaling would look nice for medium size ships, and is probably doable with a plug. I'm just not sure how the engine would react to having a single ship cover half of a screen.

Doing something to change the appearance of a ship with different outfits (said previously) would be nice, but probably impratical with the large number of graphical variations needed for the current engine.

More than possible with the current engine, and with the large number of ship types available. You'd just have to cut back on variants, is all. I'd have 3 of each ship, one small, one medium, and one large. Switch between them using an NCB in the appearance field.

Of course, having the engine do the scaling, wouldn't be too hard, and a very cool effect. Especially if the ships were all three dimensional...

But this brings up two questions.

One, how would turrents react if you were to fly between them in a small ship? Would they focus in on the craft or would only one target it and the other just aim parallel?

Two, where could I get some large renders of the ships in the base scenario?

Turrets lead the ships they are firing at. So they would probably all aim at you.

You can't, really, unless you use photoshop. You could try contacting pipeline, but don't get your hopes up.

I'd had a similar idea, but envisioned it being used in conjunction with different ship engine types. The faster a ship could move, the smaller the graphics on the screen (because you can cover more space faster). Kind of a Ares-ish idea.

Well, I was (perhaps still am) using a similar idea to add a 3D aspect to the game, allowing 3 planes of movement for the ships. Of course, it didn't work incredibly well, it was only cool to look at.

I tried the idea out with the Fed carrier with mixed results.

As you can see, it does work, but this was the largest I could make it before going in with resedit to work with the graphical files, since MissionX choked on the larger versions. It's doable, but without nice big graphics and moving ship parts (i.e. turrents and hanger bay doors), it's not really worth it.

(edit) right click (cmd-click) and do a "save as" with the pic.

It doesn't look too bad, but like you said, without a better level of detail it's only "bleh", as they say.

This could be just for show or however you call it. Like Ares, if your ship is critically damaged, a different klaxxon will sound off until its shield and armor recoveres out of the danger zone. Also to add along that, smoke trails to actually show that the ship is about to bite the dust. It's just like all the Blizzard Entertainment strategy games when a building is so damaged it shows flames, and smoke and stuff.

On the same idea, location based damage would be nice, so that in addition to the klaxon and smoke, your ship would have visible battle scars and fires from which the smoke originates. But to do that so it would look nice, you would have to increase the ship size on screen, which brings up a number of problems. Well, its something to hope for in the next space ship game by ATMOS/ Ambrosia.

I've always LOVED location based damage, ever since the old Aerotech paper RPG. However, it would be best done if the world was done in 3D (I"m still a fan of the 3D with stationary overhead view idea), with critical areas grouped into Wings, Fuselage, Cockpit/Bridge, Engines, etc. As they took damage, systems should begin to fail.
