quicktime movies in missions

I just wondered if it´s possible to put quicktime movies in missions or shipyards in Nova...is it possible to put them anywhere else than the bar...?

If so how do i apply them...and how big can they be..

And then there were silence.................

I know (from the Bible, not experimentally) that you can have moovs in the shipyard. These are continuously looping and replace the pic that's right by the info text. I don't have the templates/NovaTools handy right now, but I think there's just a field to put the name of the moov in, and it looks in the Nova Data (?) folder. I'm not sure about missions, though the same thing might be true there.

**Yes, they certainly are possible to put in before or after mission briefings. This has been a feature since the late EVO era- though in practice it was unreliable at best. EVN has brought much better stability to the feature, as far as I've heard.

Whats special about the bar?
The only place QT is used in the stock nova scenario is the gambling, (sadly - its a place nobody sees much).

i don´t know what´s special with the bar...just the only place where quicktime movies were used in nova....
But i have now started making movies for some of the happenings in nova... Though i´m not sure if i´ll use any one which inlude chararcters. maybe some, but distant or shadows...due to lack of skill in modeling and animation.

What are you talking about? The bar is one of the most special places.

Is anyone aware of any programs available to create Quicktime movies to use in EVN? If there are any, where can they be downloaded?

------------------
We brought nothing into this world, nor can we take anything out. So we shall be content with these necessary things.

Apple's iMovie would probably work. Haven't tried it.

Here's a question, and I know the answer is probably "no", but what the heck.....

Is it possible to set things up so that the game searches for a movie file to play, and (a) if it finds it, it plays the movie, and (🆒 if it doesn't, it shows a desc instead? What I mean is, if the movie is found, the desc is skipped entirely.

This isn't critical, but in the long-term planning for my Firefly mod, I was thinking about possibly including an extra download pack of clips from the series, that would play at key points during the game.

------------------

iMovie is for editing movies. To generate movies, you would have to animate them in the modeler of your choice. Bryce-level tools and up are all capable of animations as are some free tools like Strata. However, you must animate your own movie as nothing just generates you a nice Quicktime Movie file to stick into your plugin.

You could simply compose directly in C4D.

Final Cut Express would be another (cheaper) option.

Ha, not entirely related to this topic but reading modesty_blaise's post about poor animation skills gave me an idea for a plug. I think someone actually mentioned doing it before... It would be something really chinsy. All in the style of pencil doodles. You could have mission movies that were just like stickfigure flipbooks like the ones you make on Post-It pads when bored. It could be called "The Cheat's Ultra Amazing Escape the Velocity of Teen Girl Squad Total Conversion."

I seem to recall from the last time I tried this, that it didn't work at all for me. I tried it with the movie both in the Nova Data folder, and in the Plug-Ins folder and neither one worked.

Also, when it failed to find the movie, it just gave me an error and exited.

This was with the first version of Nova, and I haven't tried it since, so things might have changed somewhat.

Still not cheap but much better than a grand for Pro.

All versions of Final Cut are aimed at people who are, at the least, making videos of high enough quality to show on a TV screen. If you are just trying to make tiny QuickTime .movs to include in a plug, I think you should be using iMovie or some similar basic DV-editing program to export QuickTime files, and then switch to a more specifically QT-focused program to do fancy tricks such as bluescreening. That should save you a lot of money -- for some editing I've used a program that I got free on a CD that came with a magazine. (Strata VideoShop 3.0 -- I don't know if it does bluescreening, but it does have a pretty full range of features.) Try hunting on Versiontracker.com for shareware/freeware stuff, or look through a magazine's website for product reviews that mention QuickTime.

That's not strictly true. iMovie (like Final Cut Express) is specifically targeted towards input and output of TV-level DV video in NTSC or PAL, whereas Final Cut Pro is scaleable to any resolution or frame rate. With its ability to do non-interlaced video, Final Cut Pro is probably better for video for display on computer screens, since you can avoid the comb-edge effect that interlacing gives you on a non-interlaced display. If you wanted to do animation and edit it in iMovie, you would have to render it at TV quality, convert it to DV format, edit it, and then convert it back, with all the quality loss inherent.

Blue- and green-screening are fairly simple in Final Cut Pro, but they're usually dependent on a good lighting job having been done when shooting (and I don't mean just turning on the overhead fixtures).
