EV 3D!!!

I put this together using Cararra, Photoshop, and the Crescent Warship model:

It should be viewed with glasses that are "red on the left/blue on the right", although it should work with "red on the left/green on the right" glasses too 'cause one image is really cyan. Personally, I don't think the mild 3d effect is worth the loss of color and texture. It's a novelty, but it would wear off way too quickly to make it the centerpiece of a TC.

Looks good, Vaumnou. I wish I had some 3D glasses here to see if it really works.

David Arthur, how would I know if the camera angle is correct? I think I'd better not do that. A 2d sprite takes me long enough to render. It's the most boring thing I can think off, as I have to render and save every single sprite. That's the problem if your program has no movie feature .

Well, all you need to do is move the camera slightly to the right. It doesn't need to be precise or anything - with the sample I posted above, I didn't even take the pictures planning to make them 3-D.

However, two pictures isn't really optional for 3-D; otherwise, you'll just get a floating cardboard cutout. That's why we need two eyes.

It's not the centerpiece, it's just happens to be a part of it. Just think, the next newbie to demand EV 3D can be given a link to download the plug-in. It can be done with an existing plugin, with just altered graphics for the effect.

Plus, would you really want to sit at your computer with 3-D glasses on all the time? What would you tell people you were doing? 😄

I do agree, it would make a poor/awful TC, but It could make a very interesting modification to a TC as a bonus. I doubt it'd take much more work to take your ship models and render them in nifty 3d and release it alongside with a regular (easy on the eyes) shipversion.

The lucrative advantage is that you will have a plugin that you will be able to register and make money off it. You sell people the special 3D glasses for $5 or $10. (and users may need to use colorsinc to get their monitor set just right to work with the glasses)

And best of all: finally when someone complains about 3dEV you can give em the link and say its already been done. then watch em download with glee and come back a few hours later bichin and moaning.

As to actually useing the 3d effect, I see two posibilities. First you could make ships with things that extend toward the screen, and you could make ships operate in different layers. Make the huge ships appear far back, and fighters extended into the foreground. (Even though a cruiser appears only twice as big its really 4 times because its also twice as far away.) The planets will look really cool in 3D, and yea just go for extra big sized everything.

Well, perhaps for EVN it'd be too much. But something oldskool like (url="http://"http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/~d3rebas/creative/martinsoft/spong.html")pong(/url) could certainly handle it. 😄

In theory it's a good idea, in practice I wouldn't bet on it being that great, it might be cool for awhile, but it would wear off. But if somebody had the time to make it, i'd whip out my 3D glasses and play it for awhile.

magic eye would be impossible. You would have to rewrite nova from start to finish and add in another whole section to generate each screen with the 3d effect. It would also seriously hurt your eyes and head from the way it works if it were full screen.

What would work kinda well is to have dual images, a left screen and a right screen and you cross your eyes to merge them together into one 3d image. (like the way the virtual boy and other VR head devices work except thye at least dont require crossing because of lenses+mirrors) Unfortunately crossing your eyes also hurts your head and could mess it up. thats a bad idea.

Some graphics programs should be able to split a picture into 3 seperate images of only their component colors. One image for red, one for blue, one for green. I think this would yield the best effect.

There are only two extremly minor problems I can think of so far.

The first is paint/ionizing. Obviously you could not have it at all, or only have the only color blacker which would still work.

The second is sprite overlap. If a sprite is above another (like a ship over a planet) it would look really strange I think.

Another effect that would take extra work beyond a double rendering and combineing but would look really cool would be to array the unguided weapon's sprites at random depths. So that if your turrents are blazing it looks like some shots are coming from both the near and far side of your ship.

And because the two most popular models of glasses are red/green, or red/blue, you could create your scenario using red/cyan and it would work with ether of the two popular ones assumeing people had relitively pure filters (which could be corrected using a custom colorsinc profile to completly blacken ether blue or green.)
